Oli Piranthathu
Oli Piranthathu
Oli Piranthathu revolves around a soft-hearted taxi driver Singarama (played by Vijayan), who makes a grim living transporting corpses for higher pay and shares a deep bond with his aging mother (played by S.N. Lakshmi). His quiet, routine-bound life changes when a young woman Kalyani (played by Menaka) and an ailing elderly man (played by P.R. Gokulnath) move into the neighbouring street. Watching her from his terrace, tending plants just to catch a glimpse of her smile, his innocent attraction slowly grows into love — despite her indifference and the mystery surrounding her relationship with the older man.
Circumstances draw their families closer, and his mother warmly accepts the young woman as a potential bride, only to be shocked by a devastating truth that shatters their hopes. Rivalries, misunderstandings, and moral conflicts — especially involving a resentful corpse-carrier — push the story toward a bleak climax. The ending drew strong criticism for its tragic outcome, which conforms to the problematic cinematic trend of the time where the female character bears the ultimate, fatal penalty for societal circumstances.
